Panchmukhi Hanuman is one of the powerful forms of Lord Hanuman. In this post, we share with you Panchmukhi Hanuman Significance & Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach.
Panchmukhi Hanuman means – Lord Hanuman with Five Faces. These five faces stare in different directions and hold the spectator in awe. In fact, Panchmukhi Hanuman is a gigantic form of Lord Hanuman.
Here, we enumerate the five different faces of Panchmukhi Hanuman for you:
- Lord Hanuman: This face of Lord Hanuman faces eastwards with steadfast devotion. This form bestows peace, purity, happiness, and fulfillment. It even helps in getting rid of one’s sins.
- Lord Narasimha: This is the lion form of Lord Hanuman and is south facing. In fact, Lord Narasimha is one of the many avatars of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took Narasimha’s avatar to protect his devotee, Prahlad. Therefore, worshipping Lord Narasimha bestows fearlessness and grants victory to the devotee.
- Lord Garuda: This form of Lord Hanuman faces west. It is the eagle form of Lord Hanuman, which grants protection from negative influences, black magic, and evil spirits.
- Lord Adivaraha: This is a boar manifestation of Lord Hanuman. This form of Lord Hanuman helps to remove the bad effects of planetary movements. This form also bestows wealth and prosperity. It faces the northward direction.
- Lord Hayagriva: This is a horse form of Lord Hanuman and faces upward. This form blesses the devotee with knowledge, progeny, and liberation.
However, there is one more depiction of Panchmukhi Hanuman, which includes Lord Ganesh. It carries one face, which is depicted as half-Hanuman and half-Ganesha.
It should be noted that the Navagrahas (Nine Planets) do not bear any influence over these powerful deities. This form is a rare and powerful manifestation of Panchmukhi Hanuman.
The most significant aspect of Panchmukhi Hanuman is that it is immensely magnificent and awe-inspiring. This form came into being when Lord Hanuman was giving the responsibility of saving Lord Ram’s life. In fact, Panchmukhi Hanuman is empowered with many weapons such as:
- Parashu (Battle Axe)
- Chakra (Disc)
- Gada (Mace)
- Trishul (Trident)
- Khanda (Sword)

The Story of Panchmukhi Hanuman
During the Ramayana War, the demon Ravana called up one of his brothers, Ahiravan (the chief of Patala Loka – Netherworld), to help him against Lord Rama.
Ahiravan disguised himself as Vibhishana and kidnapped Lord Rama and Lakshman.
Hanuman was given the responsibility to save Lord Rama and Lakshman. He went to Patala Loka in search of Lord Rama and Lakshman. He came to know that Ahiravan had kidnapped Lord Rama and Lakshman. He learned that the only way to save Lord Rama and Lakshman was to kill Ahiravan.
Hanuman came to know that Ahiravan’s soul rested in five candles. Therefore, the only way to kill Ahiravan was to extinguish all five candles at the same time.
This was when Lord Hanuman manifested his “Panchmukhi” roop.
In Panchmukhi Form, Lord Hanuman’s each face faces a different direction. Together, the five faces of Lord Hanuman blew out the candles and recovered the still-unconscious Lord Rama and Lakshman back to Lanka.
It is believed that the worshipper of the Panchmukhi Hanuman form is relieved from different fears, negativity, and enemies.
Lord Hanuman is often regarded as a “Yogi.”
It is said that Lord Hanuman has reached perfection in his Siddhis. He has gained control over his five senses (Pancha Indriyas).
This is the Spiritual Meaning of the Panchmukhi Form of Lord Hanuman. It is also said that Hanuman worshipped Lord Rama in five ways:
- Naman: Chanting the name of Lord Rama
- Smaran: Constant remembrance
- Keerthanam: Singing praises & adulations
- Yachnam: Sincere & selfless plea for deep faith
- Arpanam: Offering oneself (Surrender to God)
In this way, you can worship the Panchmukhi form of Lord Hanuman. You can even worship Panchmukhi Hanuman by reciting Panchamukhi Stotra. This Stotram praises each of the five manifestations of Panchmukhi Hanuman. It helps to eradicate evil and negative forces for the devotee.
There is also the Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach which is very popular among Lord Hanuman’s devotees. This “Kavach” protects the devotee from every obstacle.
Here, we share with you some lines from this Kavach (We have also included a separate section to Panchamukhi Hanuman Kavach below):
“Surrendering to Lord Hanuman would put an end to all the enemies and lead to salvation.”
Panchmukhi Hanuman Significance
In Panchmukhi Form, Lord Hanuman (Anjaneya) has five faces and ten weapons. In fact, Lord Hanuman is regarded as a great “Yogi” (mystic) who has successfully transcended the five senses (Pancha Indriyas).
The Kamba Ramayana (in Tamil) portrays another significance of the number “five” in Panchmukhi form.
It narrates the significance of number five as follows:
- Lord Hanuman is the son of one of the five elements (son of the wind – Pavan Thanaya)
- He crossed one (water – ocean) of the five elements
- He crossed the waters through one of the five elements (sky)
- He met the daughter of one of the five elements (Earth – Sita Devi)
- He burnt down Lanka using one of the five elements (Fire)
Moreover, the Sundar Kanda describes the heroic exploits of Lord Hanuman that he performed in Lanka.
According to some Hindu scholars, it is considered auspicious to circle the Panchmukhi Hanuman idol 5, 14, 23, 32 times, or any amount wherein the digits add to give the number five.
The Panchmukhi Hanuman is a rare form of Lord Hanuman. In fact, there are many legends and interpretations that are associated with Panchmukhi Form.
According to one of the legends, Lord Hanuman appeared before Raghavendra Swami taking the Avatars of:
- Varaha
- Garuda
- Anjaneya
- Narasimha
- Hayagriva
So, Panchamukhi Hanuman is the five-headed form of Lord Hanuman that he took to kill Ahiravan (Brother of Demon Ravana) to save Lord Rama and Lakshman from his clutches.
Here, we share with you details of Panchmukhi Hanuman, which is as follows:
- East facing Anjaneya grants Ishta Siddhi to humanity
- South facing Narasimha grants Abhista Siddhi to humanity
- West facing Garuda grants “Sakala Saubhagya” to humanity
- North facing Varaha grants Dhana Prapthi to humanity
- The upward-facing (Urdhva Mukha) Hayagriva grants Sarva Vidya Jaya Prapthi to humanity
Each of the five faces of Lord Hanuman (Panchamukha) is representative of five divine qualities as follows:
- Naman
- Smaran
- Keerthanam
- Yachnam
- Arpanam
Lord Hanuman is a great Yogi who has totally surrendered himself at the feet of Lord Rama.
In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says that: “My devotee, who is free from attachment, reaches my abode.”
Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach
Panchamukhi Hanuman Kavach has been addressed to the fierce form of Hanuman in Panchamukha Roop. It is not a usual Stotra but more of a Tantric hymn aimed to provide protection to devotees. It is used to worship the five-faced Hanumanji.
