Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

A fascinating story in the Puranas brings out the importance of Yogini Ekadashi Vrat. King Kuber, who is the Lord of wealth, ruled over the empire Alkapuri in the Swargaloka. He was immensely devoted to Lord Shiva and performed Shiva Puja every day with utmost devotion.

He had appointed a gardener named Hemamali, who used to bring fresh garden flowers daily in the morning for Shiva puja.

This continued for quite some time.

Hemamali was married to a beautiful woman named Visalakshi. Once, it so happened that after collecting the flowers in the garden, Hemamali started to make merry with his wife, Visalakshi.

He forgot his duty to deliver the flowers to King Kuber for puja rituals. On the other hand, Kuber was waiting for the flowers, which never arrived at him.

So, Kuber became anxious to know why Hemamali did not turn up with the flowers. He called his soldiers and told them to find out the reason for the delay.

The soldiers reported to Kuber what had happened on that day. It made Kuber terribly angry with Hemamali. He ordered that Hemamali should be dragged inside the court.

He cursed Hemamali that he would contract leprosy. Further up, he would suffer separation from his beloved wife, Visalakshi. So, Kuber announced this punishment to Hemamali for neglecting his duty.

Hemamali immediately turned into a leper and was separated from his wife. He began to suffer immense agony and wandered here and there in the forests. Finally, he reached the Himalayas. There he found Sage Markandeya, who was engaged in deep penance.

Hemamali approached the sage and narrated his tale to him. Then, he prayed to the sage to show him a way out of his miserable state.

Sage Markandeya advised him to observe the Yogini Ekadashi Vrat to get relief from the curse. So, Hemamali kept the Ekadashi Fast with utmost devotion.

He regained his healthy appearance and was able to reunite with his wife. After that, Hemamali and Visalakshi spent the rest of their life happily.

So, this is the Yogini Ekadashi story.

Celebration & Rituals of Yogini Ekadashi

The Yogini Ekadashi Vrat has to be observed from the night of the Dashmi tithi (tenth day) in the Krishna Paksha of the Ashada month.

So, the fasting starts from the previous night of the Ekadashi. The fast continues over the Ekadashi day and concludes on the Dwadashi Tithi or the day following Ekadashi. So, the Yogini Ekadashi Vrat lasts for 36 hours (approximately).

The rituals involve puja to Lord Vishnu, donations, and feeding the Brahmins. This Ekadashi Vrat helps remove all the observer’s sins so they may live a healthy and prosperous life.

The devotee needs to pray to Lord Vishnu with a positive mind. You should offer flowers, sweets, Deep (lamp), and Tulsi leaves to the Lord. However, it would be best if you did not pluck Tulsi leaves on Ekadashi.

You and your family members should take part in the puja ceremony. One should sing bhajans & Aarti in praise of the Lord. It would help if you kept the fast without having any meals.

However, one can also keep fast by consuming one meal without grains and salt. Then, on the next day (Dwadashi), offer prayer to the Lord, light a lamp, and distribute Prasad (sweets) to complete the fast.
