Mahalaxmi is considered in Hinduism as the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Mahalaxmi Vrat is observed for appeasing and seeking the blessing of Maa Laxmi. Here we share with you Mahalaxmi Vrat Katha and Date 2024.
Maha Laxmi Vrat begins on the Shukla Ashtami Tithi during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada after four days of Ganesha Chaturthi. It is kept for sixteen consecutive days ending on Krishna Ashtami during the Hindu month of Ashwin.
Devotees observing the Mahalaxmi Puja wake up early in the morning and clean their houses and puja room. They take a Sankalp for keeping a day-long fast on the day of Mahalaxmi Puja.
They take a bath and install the Maha Laxmi idol in the puja area; they offer the Goddess flowers, fruits, and water. Finally, they close their eyes and offer prayers to Maa Lakshmi with folded hands.
They perform the Mahalakshmi Aarti at the end to appease the Goddess. Then, they observe a whole day’s fast and eat in the evening after offering prayers to Maa Lakshmi.
During the Mahalaxmi Vrat, devotees offer prayers to the eight forms of Mahalakshmi, including:
- Adi Lakshmi
- Dhan Lakshmi
- Gaja Lakshmi
- Dhaanya Lakshmi
- Veer Lakshmi
- Vijaya Lakshmi
- Santan Lakshmi
- Vidya Lakshmi
Special prayers are offered to Gaja Lakshmi, as it is believed that Mata Mahalaxmi, in this form, fills their life with wealth and prosperity.
Elaborate Puja rituals are performed to appease Maha Laxmi.
Reciting or listening to the Mahalaxmi Vrat Katha is also considered compulsory for the devotees to get Maa Maha Laxmi’s blessings; otherwise, the Vrat is deemed incomplete.
Goddess Mahalaxmi is considered the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. According to Hindu Puranic legends, when Pandava Prince Yudhistira lost all his wealth, he was gripped in immense sadness.
He approached Lord Krishna and asked him the ways to regain his wealth. So, Lord Krishna told Yudhistira that he should observe the Mahalaxmi Vrat for sixteen consecutive days.
Sage Vedvyas also suggested Dhritarashtra, Gandhari, and Kunti observe the Mahalaxmi Vrat for sixteen consecutive days to ensure their kingdom’s prosperity.
Pandava Prince Arjun approached Lord Indra and requested him to send his mighty elephant Airavata to Earth for his mother, Kunti, to help her observe the Maha Laxmi Vrat.
The first day of Mahalaxmi Vrat coincides with Radha Ashtami, Jyeshtha Gauri Puja, and Durva Ashtami.
The fasting begins on the Shukla Ashtami Tithi of Bhadrapada month. It is concluded on the Krishna Ashtami Tithi in the month of Ashwin.
The men and women observing the Mahalaxmi Vrat must maintain celibacy for sixteen days. They should rise early in the morning. They must take a bath and wear clean clothes.
They should take a vow (Sankalp) to observe the fast with sincerity and devotion.
Kalash Sthapana is performed on the first day of Maha Laxmi Vrat. Goddess Mahalaxmi is worshipped throughout the sixteen days of Maha Laxmi Vrat.
Haldi and Kumkum are offered to the deity every day. Lotus or any other flower is offered to Goddess Laxmi during each of the sixteen days of Mahalaxmi Vrat. Apart from flowers, devotees also offer Dhoop, Deep, Gandha, and Naivedya to the deity.
Devotees must not consume meat, alcohol, and tobacco during the Mahalaxmi Vrat.
Mantras and hymns of Goddess Laxmi are chanted during the Vrat period.
On the sixteenth day, Durva grass is tied into a bundle and dipped into the Kalash containing the sacred water. Now, this water is sprinkled all over the house to purify and bless it.

Who is Goddess Mahalaxmi?
Mahalaxmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is considered the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. She resides in the heart of Hari. So, Lord Vishnu is adorned with the Srivatsa mark on his chest.
She is described as having four hands. Her complexion is that of molten gold. She is hailed as equivalent to Adi-Para-Shakti.
According to Laxmi Tantra, Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati are the incarnation of Lakshmi Herself.
She appeared as Mahisamardini during the reign of Svayambhuva Manu to slew the demon Mahisasura.
Maha Laxmi Vrat Katha
Once there lived a poor Brahmin in a small village. The Brahmin was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. The poor Brahmin performed Puja and offered prayers to Lord Vishnu each day.
Lord Vishnu was immensely pleased by the devotion of that poor Brahmin. He appeared before the poor Brahmin and told him to ask one boon. So, the Brahmin asked Lord Vishnu that Maa Laxmi should come to his house.
Lord Vishnu told the Brahmin that he should ask the lady that comes to the village temple to bake “Upal” to come to his house.
She is Goddess Laxmi in the disguise of that lady. Lord Vishnu told that poor Brahmin that Goddess Laxmi would fill his house with immense riches. After saying so, Lord Vishnu disappeared from the poor Brahmin.
The next day that Brahmin went to the temple in the early morning. When that lady (Maa Laxmi) came to the temple to bake “Upal,” the Brahmin asked her to come to his house. Maa Laxmi came to know that the Brahmin had come on the advice of Lord Vishnu himself.
So, Maa Laxmi told the Brahmin that he must observe the Mahalaxmi Vrat for sixteen days; only then would she come to his house.
Maa Laxmi told Brahmin that he should keep Maha Laxmi Vrat for sixteen days. Then, on the sixteenth day, he should give “Aragh” (offering) to Chandrama. Thus, he would be blessed with immense wealth.
Now, that poor Brahmin observed the Mahalaxmi Vrat with full devotion. Maa Laxmi fulfilled her promise and filled his house with immense wealth. The Brahmin lived happily ever after. It is believed that the custom of Maha Laxmi Vrat started after that.
Whosoever performs the Maha Laxmi Vrat is blessed by Maa Laxmi and lives happily ever after.
